As actors, of course, we are looking forward to the adaptation of our favorite games into TV series or movies, and we are blown away with happiness when it happens. However, the experiences we have gained so far make us question whether the production companies are successful in casting choices.
The cinematographic quality of games now makes you feel like you’re really experiencing a TV show or movie. However, as actors, we like to adapt the games we love to TV shows or movies.
Although we have had disappointments like Assassin’s Creed, Hitman or Uncharted, some production companies offer tutorials on how to adapt, but of course, none of them are perfect. The recently adapted The Witcher and The Last of Us are the biggest examples of these, because the casting choices made by the producers for some characters did not make many of the fans happy. Here’s to the players, “Who is this?” 12 series and movie characters that make you say:
One of the rare characters who are better in the series than in the game: Jaskier/Dandelion – The Witcher
Dandelion, our cheerful bard in The Witcher 3, appears in quite a different way in the Netflix adaptation. Not only did the producers change the character’s appearance and dressing style, they even changed the character’s name.
However, the evolution of the Dandelion character into Jaskier in the series was a change that the fans welcomed, as the producers made this character great. The facial expressions and demeanor of actor Joey Batey, who plays the character, do it justice. The screenwriters have done an excellent job of bringing Dandelion’s extraordinary personality to the big screen.
Okay, not like him in the game, but at least if he looked a little like his older brother Joel: Tommy Miller – The Last of Us
We have seen Tommy, who occupies a large place in the story of the game, only in the first episode of the series. We don’t know if the similarity will increase when we see his older version in the future, but Joel’s brother Tommy, whom we saw in the first episode, does not reflect his state in the game at all.
Because Tommy in the game, besides being blonde, looks a lot like Joel in terms of face. So you can say with certainty that they are brothers. However, there is no such similarity between Joel Miller, played by actor Pedro Pascal, and Tommy Miller, played by Gabriel Luna.
We don’t doubt her acting, but they are nothing alike: Maria – The Last of Us
Maria, whom we encountered as we progressed with Ellie and Joel in the first game and who made us trust her immediately with her strong image, will also appear in the series of The Last of Us. Maria, the wife of Joel’s brother Tommy, was our blond, tattooed and blue-eyed older sister in the play.
However, HBO did not stick to the game in casting the character of Maria in the series. As a performance, we have no doubt that Rutina Wesley will put forth a great acting, but we must admit that it has nothing to do with the Maria depicted in the play.
At least she saves the outfit: Yennefer – The Witcher
Yennefer, the character Geralt is most emotionally attracted to in the book and story, stands out in The Witcher 3 with her white skin and blue/purple eyes. Of course, capturing Yennefer’s portrayed beauty in reality is not easy.
In fact, actress Anya Chalotra puts on a great performance of Yennefer with her acting and gestures, and Netflix conveys Yennefer’s dressing to the show very well. However, as you can see from the pictures, it looks nothing like the game.
Here we come, to the one that occupies the agenda the most: Ellie Williams – The Last of Us
One of the two reasons we love The Last of Us, and brought to life by actress Ashley Johnson in the game, Ellie (the other reason, of course, Joel) is a character that has managed to win the love of all players with her aura and appearance.
With the release of the first episode of the series, we all witnessed how well Ellie performance of 19-year-old actress Bella Ramsey, chosen by HBO for Ellie. Ramsey brings out the fierce, survival-fighting rebel side of Ellie in the game beautifully, and she definitely has an aura of her own beauty.
However, we must admit that there is a big difference in appearance between Ellie Williams, whom we are familiar with from the game, and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie.
They couldn’t get Sony’s permission for Andrew Garfield’s face: Peter Parker/Spider-Man — The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Here is the opposite situation. Although the game of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie with Andrew Garfield, released in 2014, was appreciated for its gameplay improvement compared to the first game, its biggest flaw was the appearance of the main character, Peter Parker. Since the game, which was supposedly adapted from the movie, could not be licensed from Sony, the face of actor Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker, was replaced by a character similar to the low-budget Nathan Drake.
Of course, these character differences do not always make the players unhappy as you can see. In some adaptations, changes to the characters can enhance the original character and appeal to fans even more.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor but unfortunately he didn’t fit the role at all: Prince – Prince of Persia
Famous Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal played the role of Prince in the film adaptation of Ubisoft’s legendary series Prince of Persia, which gave birth to Assassin’s Creed. He’s a great actor, but unfortunately he doesn’t reflect the charismatic side of the Prince of Persia…
Mark Wahlberg is here with a role he doesn’t fit, as he has so many times: Max Payne – Max Payne
This is perhaps the most unsuitable role for the famous actor Mark Wahlberg, who is Hollywood’s Swiss army knife. Wahlberg doesn’t recall the slightest bit of Max Payne, the cool cop of the game world who’s sunk into the dark world and lost everything.
Besides having a darker complexion, Mimi Ndiweni’s brown eyes don’t mirror Fringilla’s traditional green eyes at all. Fringilla’s short hair in the knee keeps her in the game, although the style is slightly different, but Netflix’s costume choices are also far from the character’s appearance in the game.
Fans even had a Reddit discussion where they found it pointless that the character of Fringilla had dark skin on the show since she is related to Ciri and is cousin to Anna Henrietta. However, if we talk about his role in season 1, Fringilla fits his role in the books more than The Witcher 3.
It doesn’t matter that she looks different, it’s still heartbreaking: Sarah Miller – The Last of Us
The series of The Last of Us likewise manages to destroy us with Sarah’s death in its first episode. Sarah, Joel’s daughter, whom Joel lost when the zombie epidemic began, is blonde, blue-eyed, and white-skinned in the game.
Although the young actress Nico Parker, who plays her, does not look like a single gram in terms of appearance, she carries the innocence conveyed by Sarah’s face in the plays, and she smashes us with her acting in the death scene of Sarah, just like in the play.
